Canadian research shows that physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep are closely interrelated. As a result, the world’s first 24 hour Movement Guidelines suggests:
- Those aged 14-17 years need 8 to 10 hours of sleep and 5-13 years need 9-11 hours of sleep per night
- Kids need 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity
- Move more! Aim for a variety of structured and unstructured light physical activities
- No more than 2 hours per day of recreational screen time
- Limited sitting for extended periods
In fact, kids may not be moving enough to be tired at the end of the day and they may also be too tired to move. Sleep deprivation is a problem and the message is clear: kids who sit less and move more will sleep better.
So think about it – get out there with your kids and move more, so you can sleep more and reap the health benefits together!
