Virtual COVID-19 Outpatient Program (VCOP) at Boundary Trails Health Centre
The COVID-19 pandemic has placed significant demand on our health system, but over the past several months, the use of collaborative virtual tools has helped support health care facilities in meeting the needs of COVID-19 patients. This includes the Virtual COVID Outpatient Program (VCOP) designed to manage mild and moderately ill patients with COVID-19 as outpatients in the community. The program applies a combination of virtual nurse and physician visits and community supports, including home oxygen therapy. Patients are provided with pulse oximeters and thermometers and
provide results to the VCOP team on a regular basis.
In December 2020, Health Sciences Centre (HSC) Winnipeg launched the first phase of VCOP to manage mild and moderately ill COVID-positive patients who either presented to, or were discharged from HSC. Since that time, referral sites have expanded to include St. Boniface and the Grace
Hospitals in Winnipeg. The VCOP team has supported more than 220 patients on an outpatient basis through a combination of virtual nurse and physician visits and community supports and has saved greater than 1220 hospital days.
On Wednesday, June 2, 2021 the program will launch at Boundary Trails Health Centre. While the monitoring functions will remain centralized at HSC, the program will now be accepting referrals from Boundary Trails Health Centre for COVID-positive of patients from the inpatient unit only, who meet the program’s acceptance criteria.
