Health Canada Shelf-Life Authorized Extension for Spikevax COVID-19 Vaccine
Health Canada has authorized a 2-month shelf life extension (from 7 months to 9 months) for all lots of Moderna’s SPIKEVAX (elasomeran). Furthermore, the extension is retrospectively applied to units (10-dose or 5mL fill volume vials) carrying English-only labels with a printed expiry date between December 2021 to August 2022. The extension to shelf life only applies to product that was stored in the Ultra Low or Frozen temperatures at the time of the extensions. Any product that has been thawed and in the refrigerator is to still follow the one month time limit for use as per the product specifications (unless the product expiry date occurs within the month from being thawed). There is no shelf life extension on thawed product.

For units without a printed expiry date (i.e. 15-dose or 8mL fill volume vials), the 9-month shelf life was applied in October and Healthcare Provider’s should continue to refer to the October 29, 2021 HPRC for shelf life information.
